Aluminium heat diffusion plates are located across the joists and stapled in place. Continuous pipework is pressed into place within the grooves of the diffuser plates. No supplementary fixings are required as the process of pressing the pipework into the diffuser plates is sufficient to retain it securely in the correct position. These plates are 395mm wide which is the standard spacing for traditional joisted floors.
With the development of manufactured joists the joist spacing has increased up to 600mm. An aluminium spreader plate cannot be used for these joists. The other problem is that these joists must not be notched, making continuous pipe installation impossible. There are several methods to overcome these issues such as counter battening joists. This will lift the floor level by a minimum of 16mm. You can apply battens to the chipboard attached to the joists and add additional floor on top of the battens. This method increases finished floor height by the batten height plus the height of chipboard/floorboards.
Alternative methods may be to:
- Apply an overlay system to the chipboard attached to the joists.
- To use the Lewis floor system. Full information on this system is in the screeded floor section.
When using diffuser plates it is essential that some form of insulation is used below the plates to stop heat losses into other areas. This could even be in the room below. Consideration also needs to be taken into account for your finished floor height in addition to the tog rating if carpet is to be laid.
