Ground source heat pumps
These recover heat from the earth by either a collector array laid in the ground at a depth of 1.2m or by bore holes, both systems require the collector to be sized to the heat demand and the heat pump output. Once the system is installed the collectors are filled with a glycol mixture. The efficiency of a ground source will depend on the heating system it is suppling and the standard of the installation. It is not unusual to see 320- 400% efficiency from these systems.
Units are supplied from manufacturers such as Nibe, Vaillant and Stiebel Eltron with other brands available on request. There are a range of outputs covering heat loads in excess of 500kw. The modern average house requires 12 – 16kw to cover heat losses and hot water requirements.
Water source heat pumps
These recover heat from a water source, this can be a river, lake or bore hole. For these systems we use a ground source heat pump with a plate heat exchanger. It is important to size the plate and the supply pump correctly as this will have major impact on system performance. It is not unusual to see 400- 450% efficiency from these systems.

Air source heat pumps
These recover heat from the air and are directly affected by air temperature and air flow. It is important to look at performances at lower temperatures before choosing a model. Air source heat pumps will work at low temperatures and are especially suited to the British climate which has a milder and more humid climate compared to Europe. It is not unusual to see 270- 320% efficiency from these systems. Many manufacturers state that their heat pumps will work at higher efficiencies and this is true but we look at the efficiency of the whole heating system.

Exhaust air heat pumps
These are products that are suited to small heat demands. The heat is recovered through the ventilation system installed in the property. With a maximum loading of 4kw these are for ideally suited to flats or apartments that are being built or renovated. It is important that the ventilation to the unit is designed to give the correct air flow through the unit and not to over ventilate the property. The heating is via a wet system supplying underfloor heating or radiators. They do not supply heat via the air. Units are manufactured by Nibe.
